Say what?!? Birth humming? For years we’ve watched women birth on TV with strained faces, forced ‘purple’ pushing and tense bodies. Forced pushing is exhausting and stressful on both mum & baby and can even slow down labour as it closes the sphincters of the vagina ahead of baby descending.
.
So instead, in hypnobirthing, we encourage birthing mums to embrace birth humming It not only uses our body’s own natural expulsive reflex to gently nudge baby down and out but allows control over our birth. Rather than being told to push, we go with our instincts and natural urge to bear down. Humming has HUGE benefits in birth, here’s 5…
. Humming slows down your breathing rate. We normally breathe 15-17 times in a minute but with humming you can bring it down to 4-6 a minute which helps to slow down your heart rate and minimises stress
. A deep hum grounds and brings you back to your centre
. It’s relaxing and in turn will promote oxytocin, plus softens your neck, face, head and shoulder muscles
. Our pelvic floor muscles and our voice are connected – a deep, low hum will help your pelvic floor muscles to relax rather than contract. This will support your uterus in moving your baby through and out of your body
. Humming reduces the number of thoughts that fill your head. When you are humming there is little room for over thinking – so you can focus with clarity on birthing your baby.
